MANILA, 22 August 2024 - The Ministry of Health (MOH) and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Philippines today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) dedicated to significantly reducing maternal deaths in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM). This collaboration will prioritize improving sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services, addressing gender-based violence, and empowering women and adolescents.
The MOU was signed by Minister of Health Dr. Kadil Sinolinding, Jr. and UNFPA Philippines Country Representative Dr. Leila Saiji Joudane.
“This partnership marks a significant step forward in our commitment to providing quality healthcare, especially for women and mothers in the Bangsamoro,” said Minister Sinolinding. “By working closely with UNFPA, we can leverage our combined expertise and resources to address maternal mortality and ensure that every woman has the right to a healthy and fulfilling life.”
Dr. Joudane emphasized the importance of investing in women and girls’ health and rights. “UNFPA is committed to supporting the Bangsamoro government in achieving its goals of reducing maternal mortality and improving the lives of women and adolescents. This partnership will enable us to implement evidence-based interventions and strengthen the health system to better serve the needs of the community.”
The partnership will focus on enhancing the capacity of healthcare providers to deliver high-quality sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services, including family planning, maternal care, and prevention and management of gender-based violence. Additionally, the MOU will promote policies and programs that support women’s and girls’ health and rights, including the full implementation of the Responsible Parenthood and Reproductive Health Law in BARMM.
