Typhoon Bopha/Pablo Situation Report (18 December 2012): Boosting RH care support; youth volunteers brace for work

UNFPA, in coordination with the provincial health office, distributed hygiene kits to pregnant and lactating mothers, as well as to women of reproductive age in the municipality of New Bataan, one of the worst-affected areas in the province of Compostela Valley.

A total of 119 youth volunteers have been oriented for the master listing of pregnant and lactating women in affected communities and are ready to be deployed. Medicines and reproductive health kits, such as clinical delivery supplies and clean delivery kits are also being provided to health facilities.

Functioning rural health units continue to provide medical care to mothers, such as in the municipality of Boston in Davao Oriental where seven mothers have given birth at the rural health unit since the typhoon. However, a lot of pregnant and lactating women affected by the disaster are in need of maternal care. To address this  need, UNFPA and its partners will be conducting a series of reproductive health medical missions in Compostela Valley and Davao Oriental in the next few days.
