Super Typhoon Rai (local name Odette) made its first landfall in the Philippines on 16 December 2021. With maximum sustained winds of 195 km/h and gustiness of 260 km/h, Typhoon Rai remains the third strongest storm ever recorded in the Northern Hemisphere.

It continues to leave a majority of the affected population in need of food supplies, potable water, and access to electricity and communication lines. Families and communities remain separated,  health, education, police, and social services disrupted, and community support systems and protection mechanisms broken down. This has left women, children, and adolescent girls exposed, facing higher risk of Gender-Based Violence and adolescent pregnancy. 

Pregnant women, particularly those with high risk pregnancies, face greater risk of giving birth in unsafe and unsanitary conditions, given the damage wrought by Typhoon Odette on hospitals, clinics, and birthing centers.
