As the Philippines will send its delegation to Kenya for the ICPD+25 Nairobi Summit next week, the country launches today the “Humans of ICPD” photo exhibit at the Philippine Heart Center, Quezon City, as part of a global campaign to drumbeat awareness about the need to continue to work on the agenda of the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) at the country level.

The event is organized by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), and its government partners, the Commission on Population and Development (POPCOM) and the Philippine Heart Center.

The ICPD held 25 years ago in Cairo, Egypt, set forth a Programme of Action signed by 179 countries including the Philippines, embarking on an ambitious journey to reproductive health, including voluntary family planning and safe pregnancy, women’s empowerment and gender equality.

This “Humans of ICPD” campaign seeks to put a human face to the ICPD agenda through photos that portray the lives of global citizens following the 15 principles of the ICPD Programme of Action that address issues encompassing human equality, participation in sustainable development, women’s empowerment, poverty alleviation, physical and mental health, education, migration, indigenous communities, and sustained economic growth.

“As part of the global community, Filipinos need to see the value of the ICPD as a platform for Agenda 2030 including the Sustainable Development Goals,” says Undersecretary of Population and Development and Executive Director of POPCOM, Dr. Juan Antonio Perez III. “What we do as a country, along with that of other countries, will go a long way towards ensuring that we will have a world where people live in dignity and that we are able to manage our natural resources for the future generations to enjoy.”

POPCOM and UNFPA are proud to have been part of the 25 fruitful years of the ICPD implementation, taking on extra significance this year when both agencies mark their 50th founding anniversary.

“UNFPA wishes to congratulate the government and the people of the Philippines for the country’s steadfast achievements of the ICPD Programme Action so far, and thank in particular POPCOM for leading the national efforts,” asserted Mr. Iori Kato, UNFPA Country Representative. “The Philippines’ commitment to the ICPD agenda is reflected in many policies and programmes, and is aligned with this youthful country’s overall thrust towards reaping a demographic dividend and gender equality.”

The forthcoming Nairobi Summit will take place in Nairobi, Kenya, on 12-14 November 2019. The Summit organized by the Governments of Kenya and Denmark and UNFPA will be a gathering of heads of state, ministers, senior government officials, civil society leaders, and sectoral opinion-leaders aimed at renewing country-level commitments to accelerate implementation of the ICPD POA. Officials from NEDA, DFA, POPCOM, DOH, DepEd, Congress, and representatives from civil society and youth organizations will be among the country’s delegation to the Summit. The Philippine delegation will be led by His Excellency Dr. Ernesto M. Pernia, Secretary of Socioeconomic Planning of NEDA.

“We look forward to Member States renewing their commitment at the Nairobi Summit on ICPD25: Accelerating the promise, a high-level global conference organized to hopefully complete the unfinished agenda of the full implementation of the ICPD Programme of Action,” Usec Perez concluded.

The photo-exhibit is held at the main lobby of the Philippine Heart Center, East Avenue, Quezon City. The exhibit will be open until 1700H of Saturday, 09 November 2019, and is open to the general public.
